Dry eye disease, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a chronic and progressive disease. Common symptoms of dry eye include dryness, soreness, eye fatigue, variable vision, grittiness or a feeling that something is in your eye, watering, and sensitivity to light. Majority of chronic dry eye disease is caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). The glands that produce oil in the eye are called Meibomian glands. Meibomian glands secrete meibum, or oils, that create a protective film over your tears. Patients with MGD/Dry Eye Disease do not properly produce enough oils, breaking down the protective tear film and allowing for tears to evaporate quickly leaving the eye dry hence why patients with dry eye will notice that they their eyes water. The eye will excessively water in hopes of lubricating itself but really its the oil layer that is integral to keeping the eye lubricated. As the affected glands become increasingly inflamed due to a blockage of the glands, the normal oily secretions become thickened, restricting gland secretion. In many patients, glands affected by MGD can atrophy, leading to gland death. It is important to identify and treat this disease early. If you have any of the above symptoms, please call the office and book a dry eye consult and iLux treatment.
The latest treatments for MGD and Dry eye are office-based procedures that enhance function of the Meibomian glands. Vue Vision Centre is pleased to be able to offer to our patients the newest dry eye treatment technology, iLux.
iLux is a handheld device that uses a light source to heat the glands and compress them at the same time intended to help your Meibomian Glands excrete your natural oils to protect your tears and cornea. ILux is the only handheld FDA approved treatment for MGD uniquely designed to customize treatments for each patient. Patients describe the treatment as a “warm eye massage”. The iLux targeted treatment lasts about 10 minutes per eye, and typically eases patient’s symptoms for up to 6-8 months.
Is iLux Right for you? Our eye doctors will perform a series of diagnostic tests to evaluate your gland health and performance of gland secretions. You may be asked to complete a short questionnaire, undergo a simple slit lamp examination, and capture images of your glands with specific Meibomian imaging technology. If you would like to book an iLux treatment, please call our office today to schedule an appointment.
